Multiple law enforcement officers were shot in Charlotte, N.C., on Monday as members of a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force were trying to serve a warrant and were met by gunfire, the police said.

The authorities shut down the city’s Shannon Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Monday afternoon in order to more easily move victims to hospitals, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media.

Just before 5 p.m., the police said that a “shooting suspect” had been found dead inside a home on the 5000 block of Galway Drive and that the neighborhood had been declared safe, though some roads remained closed.

The police said they were questioning two other residents of the home and that the investigation was ongoing.

The number of people injured and the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear. The task force is made up of officers from multiple agencies.

Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina said on social media that he was in contact with law enforcement agencies and offered the help of state resources. Vi Lyles, the Charlotte mayor, said on social media that she was “deeply saddened by the shooting” and asked Charlotte residents to keep the injured law enforcement officials and their families “in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

This is a developing story.
